Fantastic Voyage

The Rocket Cinema Festival blasts off on Friday, October 28th, in Amsterdam and orbits around a further eight destinations before landing in Groningen on November 26th. Inspired by this year’s theme ‘Adventure,’ DJs, artists and musicians have been invited on board the mothership to create and perform new soundtracks for vintage movies.

Space is the Place. The journey begins in the Planetarium in Amsterdam where Klerkx and the Secret perform an up-tempo, spaced-out soundtrack for the sci-fi classic ‘Fantastic Voyage’ (GB, 1966).

In ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Raquel Welch squeezes into a skin-tight rubber suit and joins a surgical team of three scientists, who are sent on a mission to save the life of a Russian scientist who has suffered brain injury after an assassination attempt. The crew, traveling in a submarine, have been shrunk down to microscopic size and injected into the patient’s blood system. They have exactly one hour to reach the brain and repair the injury before everything starts growing back to its original size.

In this voyage through the invisible depths of the human body, the crew pass through the heart, lungs and arteries in an imaginative decor built in true 1960’s psychedelic style and are continuously threatened by the scientist’s natural defenses: white corpuscles, reticular fibers and antibodies. Scary stuff, those micro organisms!

The Planetarium in Artis is the perfect location for this futuristic voyage through the micro-cosmos of the human body’s inner space. Klerkx and the Secret bring the film up to date with a new soundtrack which highlights the emotional turmoil felt by crew members and builds the tension to near breaking point as the film reaches its dramatic climax.
