‘Short Term 12’ by director Destin Cretton has won the American Indie Competition during the 8th edition of Leiden International Film Festival. With an average of 4.5 out of 5, the winner left behind the 16 other films in the competition. ‘Short Term 12’ is about a 20-something supervising staff member (Brie Larson) of a foster care facility who navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend.

LIFF welcomed over 30.000 visitors this year. General manager Alexander Mouret was delighted with this result: “It’s good to see LIFF growing every year and that the guests are coming from further and further away. This year’s new American Indie Competition certainly contributed to that. This will be something to keep in mind for the next editions.”

LIFF took place from 1-10 November 2013 and began with unique screenings of ‘The Pilgrim’ (1923) and Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Immigrant’ (1917). These were shown in the historic Pieters-church in Leiden and were accompanied by the Residence Orchestra. ‘The World’s End’ was shown as the final film and witnessed its Dutch premiere at LIFF.
