Useful Photography

Useful Photography #10

Useful Photography is a magazine that takes the ordinary out of the ordinary by analyzing and taking pictures out of context. Each edition the magazine explores another part of the practical photography, for example; how non-famous people are portrayed when they win a price/award, or the opening shots of a pornographic movie. Photography out of text books, sales catalogues and instruction manuals may seem dull at first glance but Useful Photography proves them to be very interesting images when taken out of context.

This tenth edition Useful Photography focuses on wedding photos, a very weird phenomenon when you think of it. A wedding ought to be very personal and have its own signature, still the only proof left of the big day – the photographs – look like stock images. The poses, backgrounds and frames are almost always similar to each other. Useful Photography makes wedding photography an art-worthy subject by thinking it over and pointing out how much people are alike and that weddings are a universal good, yet at the same time indicate our lack of originality.

Each edition of Useful Photography is selected and collected by Hans Aarsman, Claudie De Cleen, Julian Germain, Erik Kessels and Hans Van Der Meer. You can order Useful Photography here.
