The Edge Effect

Daniel Kukla is a photographer with a background in both biology and anthropology, which is clearly reflected in his new series The Edge Effect. The images were shot in Joshua Tree National Park, where Kukla was granted an artist’s residency, using a square mirror on an easel to reflect the horizon as if it were a landscape painting sitting quietly in the middle of the desert. The title of the series refers to the ecological name of the borderlands between different ecosystems in juxtaposition. Kukla tried to capture this phenomenon by using the mirror, trying to frame opposing elements in one picture.
