Revital Cohen – STRP 1-10 March
Revital Cohen is a designer and researcher who develops critical objects and provocative scenarios exploring the relationship between man and technology, and the border between art and design. She is a huge fan of life machine devices and brings two of those to STRP. Electrocyte Appendix is a work which offers new functions to the human body, such as the ability to produce energy from our blood sugar and gastric acid. This work is based on the inherent electric voltage of each living creature. Cohen shows this through giving us an ‘electrocyte’ appendix, which allows us to plug in our iPod and listen to music. The Immortal is a collection of connected life-support machines from the medical world, such as an incubator, a heart-lung machine, a mechanical fan, an intra-operative cell saving machine, and a dialysis machine. These form a closed circuit which circulates oxygen and artificial blood through electric impulses. These machines replace some of our most important bodily functions and rely on each other due to the closed circuit. This is Cohen’s way to make us aware of the fact that our life (expectancy) is progressively dependent to these kinds of machines. Click here for a video preview.
Both of these works can be seen at STRP in Eindhoven from 1-10 March.
