Ghost Estates
Photographer Valérie Anex visited the rural western and northern parts of Ireland to capture the many ghost estates that dot the landscape. Thoses estates are developments in which over half of the homes are either unoccupied or incomplete, all due to the Irish housing bubble bursting in ’08. Construction on building sites halted suddenly, leaving a tail of ghost estates. The unfinished developments are haunting symbols of the property market’s collapse and a sign for the economic disintegration of the country. Just last year, there were some 1,300 ghost estates left in Ireland.
