Fine art photographer Birthe Piontek lives in Vancouver, Canada and uses her photography to explore the concept of ‘Self’ and the individual. She mainly focuses on portrait photography, but she also dabbles in other art forms such as installations and sculptures in order to investigate the essence of portraiture and to what degree identity can be visualised. The series ‘Mimesis’ highlights our attempts to capture the essence of an individual in a photo. By altering and reinterpreting the original images, the viewer is urged to look beyond the surface of photos to discover hidden aspects of our identity.
